Anomalous Augers

The ocean is a space of transition.  It is traversed when a journey from land to land is taken.  Journey’s begin with standing on the threshold of potential.  The ocean represents potential in all of its fantasy and fear with its creeping and unpredictable boundaries.  It harbours a myriad of thresholds – its surface, its shores, its depths, its expanse and its unknowns. Its powers are driven by the great beyond of ‘heavenly bodies’, it is home to the strange and the not yet understood.  It cannot be tamed and it refuses to be fully known.   It is liminal, both in its space and in our potential experience of it, if left to ponder on its thresholds for long enough.

Liminal spaces offer the potential to traverse into the unknown.  These are meaningful experiences that allow us to transcend previous states of being.  Liminal spaces beckon profound change.  Those who are ready for it often seek out those spaces, becoming initiates ready for delivery into the sacred and unknown.  However, beyond religious implications, to watch and reflect from the oceans shores is to consider crossing a threshold.

This work explores the Ocean and its impact as liminal space-experience.  It draws a correlation between seaside-ocean threshold perspectives of visitor-seeker, and of the initiate on the threshold between the profane and sacred.  The work postulates fear-fantasy anomalies that align with initiate synchronicities as ‘glitch’ moments that signal a great journey of profound knowledge or discovery is about to begin, aiming to bring viewers to the precipice, no matter how frightening the possibilities.
